SEEING CLEARLY

As God’s people turn from false teaching to God’s truth, admit their darkness and receive God’s light, and accept Jesus’ righteousness for their sin, God’s consistent promise is applied: He does forgive—every sin, once and for all. This fuller understanding deeply matters: an “already-and-complete forgiveness” expands our view of the gospel and redefines our relationship with our forgiving God.

To make the point as clearly as possible, then, there are no references to Jesus’ followers repeatedly asking God for forgiveness after Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. In Christ, you and I are already fully accepted by God; we are already declared whole and pure in God’s eyes. In this truth, Kyle (from the beginning of the chapter) can sleep at night, and those in recovery ministries can stop self-flagellating. We can all be free from our guilt and shame, and rest in a strong assurance, knowing that by Jesus’ finished work—not by our requests or our repeated confessions of sin—we are already, once and for all, fully forgiven and free.
